These tests show the difference between a 7200 RPM drive and a 5400 RPM drive. The 7200 RPM drive is a Maxtor Diamond Plus 27.2 GB, model number: ST0192720U, it only costs $200 at Office Depot. The 5400 RPM drive is the drive that came preinstalled in my G3. The first set of tests are in seconds, so shorter times are better. The second set of scores are Norton Utilities 4.0.3 System Info and Mac Bench 5.0 Disk scores, so larger scores are better.

As you can see, a faster RPM hard drive offers a huge speed increase. In my mind, this is the best performance for the price upgrade that you can get. Note: Both these hard drives had the exact same files on them; The Maxtor drive's directory was fragmented 39% while the OEM drive's directory was fragmented 20%.

Arbitrary Quote - I finally came up with a punishment for the boy. First, no leaving the house, not even for school. Second, no egg nog. In fact, no nog period! And third, absolutely no stealing for three months!
