Radiologic is a hard drive formatter, installer, driver, tester, optimizer, and more. With this simple to use application, you can do more with your hard drive than you ever thought before.

Installation:

Installation of this program is pretty normal, except for one thing. The installer must be copied to the hard drive to function properly. But don't worry, the installer on the CD will do this automatically. After installation, you must restart to take advantage of the new drivers.

Usage:

Using this program is pretty east. Just click on a supported drive, and use the tabs, buttons, sliders, dialogs, and other Mac User Interface objects to control it. Everything is laid out in an easy to use way, that allows for even the most novice person to use this program.

The heart of this program is it's drivers. The drivers need to be loaded on any devices you wish to do tasks upon. But, one feature that I love is the ability to load drivers individually. This way, you don't have to have extra extensions in your system folder. All you have to do to load the individual drivers is click a Button, and they are loaded in seconds.

After the driver is loaded, you have tons of things you can do. First, there are four tabs (Volumes, Media, Speed, Settings) that when click, offer many functions to perform.

The first one, Volumes, let's you mount and unmount drives, set weather the drive automatically mounts at startup, write protect the volume, and set a password for the volume. When setting the password, you can choose between many types of encryption including none, fast, 56 bit, and 128 bit.

The next tab, Media, allows you to initialize, verify, and update the volume. Initialize lets you erase your entire hard disk, and partion it off if you like. The Verify feature lets you verify the drive by reading all blocks (light), reading and writing to all blocks (medium), erasing the entire drive and reading and writing to all blocks (full). By verifying your drive, you can see if there are bad blocks on your drive. Update just updates the driver on the drive to the very latest available version.

Then there is the Speed tab. This tab does what many people want to know about their drive, but can never find out. Once you click the Run Tests button, it will quickly read and write data to the disk to see exactly how fast it is. It measures access time, sustained read and write, maximum read, and transaction overhead speeds. You will never be left in the dark as to how fast your drive is.

Finally, the settings tab. With hard drives, all you get is a checkbox that allows you to turn Load Driver at Startup on and off for the particular device. But, when you use this tab on removable media, you get extra options such as spin down time, write protection, write verify, and AV mode.

One of the best features of this program is the driver's ability to play nice with Apple's Drivers. If you uncheck the load driver at startup option, the Apple Driver (which never really gets replaced) controls the drive instead of the Radialogic driver. This is a very nice change over other hard drive utilities.

Problems:

I didn't come across any problems while using this program. Everything went very smoothly, with every feature working as advertised. I guess the main problem for those who are forgetful is the password feature. Once a password is set on a drive, you must remember it. If you ever forget, the only thing you can do with your drive is reformat it.

Conclusion:

If you have a troublesome hard drive, would like to squeeze every bit of speed from your Mac, or just want more than what Drive setup offers, this program is for you. It will do almost everything you could want from a hard drive utility, for a low price.

Arbitrary Quote - I finally came up with a punishment for the boy. First, no leaving the house, not even for school. Second, no egg nog. In fact, no nog period! And third, absolutely no stealing for three months!
