If you are looking for great photo quality prints, at an acceptable price, look no further than the Epson Stylus Photo 750. This printer will print vibrant, great looking photos, and sharp, easy to read text.Set up:
If you don't follow Epson's instructions, problems could crop up. Luckily, they have provided a very nice quick start guide, that will give you all the information you need. From unpacking the printer, to when to plug it in, to installing the ink cartridges, all the way to installing the software, it's all there.
Usage:As with any printer in the Mac world, you must choose your model in the Chooser. Open up the Chooser, select Epson 750, select your port, and you are ready to print. Any application in which you select the print command will now open Epson print driver software. Although the shear amount of options can be overwhelming, Epson has combined everything into an easy to use package.
From the main dialog, you can select such things as print quality, copies, pages, and paper type. But as soon as you get into the advanced options, you get options such as half toning, colorsync, brightness and hue controls, MicroWeave, and more. Plus, by using the buttons at the top of the dialog, you can control the layout, watermark, and print size. Plus, you can check on the status of ink remaining, clean the print heads, align the print heads, and test the printer. With all of this control, you can churn out perfect images.
Not only does Epson write wonderful driver software, they also make a great photo editing program. PhotoLab, is Epson's Photoshop. While it doesn't have nearly as many options as commercial photo touch up programs, this little wonder can really help out beginners. With it, you can quickly and easily touch-up your pictures, so that they look the way you want. I must have if printing photographs.
But enough about the software, what can the hardware do? Well, not only does this entirely black printer look great, it also works great too. With Epson 6 picoliter MicroPiezo technology, you can get great printouts every time. From clear crisp text to dazzling images, this printer will deliver everything you need. Not to mention the six color technology (most printers only use four colors), which bring photograph printing to a new height. The photo printouts look exactly like the originals.
Another big plus with this printer is the types of papers it can use. Plain paper, envelopes, T-Shirt transfers, Photo paper, glossy paper, transparencies, and business cards only touch the tip of what you can print on. That means for nearly every project you have, you can print it out with this printer. And no matter what kind of paper you use, you will always get good results.
That brings us to one of the biggest used comparisons in printers, the speed. Using my stopwatch, I calculated the following speeds (in pages per minute): Text at 5 ppm, Text and graphics at 3-4 ppm, Full page graphics at 1.5 ppm, 4x6 photos at 1 ppm. Now that's fast. That means you can print out this entire review in about 35 seconds. While this may not seem significant for small projects, when you printout a 100 page .pdf manual, you will be very happy you have that speed.
But one of the major letdowns with inkjet printers is the cost of ink cartridges. The Epson Stylus Photo 750 gets about average life from it's cartridges at about 500 pages from a black cartridge, and 300 pages from a color cartridge. Luckily, places like Ink4Art and 2 for 1 Inkjet have come through for use. By bypassing the Epson brand name, they are able to keep cartridge prices down, while not sacrificing print quality or quantity.
One final feature of this printer is its ability to connect to Macs or PCs over USB, Serial, or Parallel connections. This is great for those of you who have computers of various platforms, and for old and new Mac users alike. Not to mention the fact that you can easily hook it up to both ha Mac and PC, with no problems whatsoever. Talk about convenience.
Problems:I haven't had any kind of problems with this printer. From past experiences, I have learned to cover up the printer with a dust cover when not in use. This will keep the print heads clean, and will stop the majority of future smudges and streaks.
Conclusion:This printer is wonderful. From it's beautiful black color, to it's fast printing, to its wonderful printouts, this printer has it all. I would recommend the Epson Stylus Photo 750 to anyone on a budget, looking for great printouts.
