ChaosMaster is a wonderful utility for cleaning up your hard drive. With tests such as file integrity, application version , duplicate files, orphaned preferences, and more, you can eliminate a bunch of unneeded junk on your hard drive.

Installation:

Installing this program is quite simple. Open the installer, start the installation, enter your serial number, and your done. That's the way installations should be, quick, short, and concise.

Usage:

Chaos Master can be used two ways. You can use the quick one button approach that will run all the major tests at once, or you can go through and scrutinize every file in expert mode. Both techniques have their advantages, and disadvantages, but both work very well. I prefer the expert mode over the quick mode for one major reason, I know exactly what is going on. I don't want some program to go deleting my important documents like mad. Although I have confidence that the advanced algorithms used wouldn't do that, I just feel safer in expert mode.

In the one click (or wizard) mode, you can select what kind of things it checks such as File Integrity, Lost Files, and Saving Space. You can select what drive(s) to check, and whether or not to to check remote volumes. After that, just hit the start button and let the wizard take over. He will run all the tests needed, and decided what you need, and what you don't.

However, if you don't like giving the wizard so much control, you can use the expert mode. In expert mode, you can preform such actions as File Integrity, Orphaned files/aliases, cleaning up the preferences folder, duplicate file check, slim fat applications, and much more. By selecting exactly what happens to your hard drive, you have a ton more control than in wizard mode.

Not only do you have control over what gets checked, but you also get presented with what was found, and you have the deciding factor as to what happens to your files. This is a great security feature, in it allows you to be a sort of middle man between finding files, and deleting files.

After you check out your files, you may want to make sure everything is up to date. With Chaos Master's Versions tab, you can check the version of your control panels and applications against the latest version listed on versiontracker.com. This is a great way to keep up to date, and to make sure you don't miss that all important upgrade.

The final tab is something we Mac users don't see a whole lot of, Uninstall. While the Windows world has hundreds of programs to uninstall what they don't want, we have to go through a find and trash procedure. The utility eases that process by letting you select an application to uninstall, and uninstall everything from it. A great way to clean up your hard drive of unused applications and files.

One last thing that this program will do is rebuild the desktop. Although you can get free applications to do this for you, this feature rounds out Chaos Master's arsenal nicely. Without it, you would be required to have one of those programs laying around, but with it, you can save that much more disk space.

Problems:

Every test I preformed, with every machine I used it on, went smoothly. That's a big thing with these kinds of programs. If the application were to crash when repairing something, that file could be lost forever.

Conclusion:

If you need some extra space on your hard drive, or you like to run a tight ship, or you want to make sure all your files are in good condition, you want this program. Radialogic has put together a great assortment of utilities, in an easy to use package, that will really round out your maintenance needs.
