Pangea Arcade is a combination of three modernized classic arcade games. At the core, these games may be Centipede, Missile Command, and Asteroids, ut play for a few minutes and you will see there is much more.

Installation:

Installation is as simple as dragging the software from the disk image to your hard drive.

Usage:

You can see a screenshot of each of the three games included with Pangea Arcade in the picture to the right. The first game is Firefall. This game is probably the most like its grandfather: Centipede. The objective of Firefall is to destroy each section of the wormy thing as it slithers down the screen. There are various power-ups which a revealed after blasting through the stationary objects scattered about the screen. The action is consistently fast and furious since you will often have things coming at you from every direction. Hopefully you won't develop carpel tunnel in your index finger playing this game.

The next screenshot features the game Warheads. This game is based upon Missile Command, which I was first introduced to back in the System 7.1 days. At the bottom of the view you have three rocket launchers, and a handful of power stations to protect. Your rocket launchers are your only defense against a barrage of missiles trying to destroy the world. What's cool about Warheads is that there are multiple sectors, each with their own power stations and rocket launchers. After successfully shielding against one wave of missiles, you will be randomly sent to a different section to try to defend it against the next round of ICBMs. If you like a lot of explosions, you'll be right at home with Warheads.

The final screenshot shows my favorite game of the pack: Nucleus. Unlike the other two games, Nucleus adds a whole new dimension to its classic influence: Asteroids. Most Asteroids clones simply involve crushing all of the asteroids into smithereens. Nucleus has a completely different goal. While busting up the rocks, electrons will be released which you must take to the nucleus of the currently active element. Each level progresses through the periodic table of elements, meaning each round requires more electrons to be gathered. It's so much fun, you won't even realize you are learning along the way!

All three of these games have a couple things in common, the first being excellent graphics. Pangea Software is known for making great looking games and this is certainly no exception. The detail for a sprite based game is incredible. Moreover, the special effects are simply outstanding. You're never at a loss for eye candy in any of these games. In fact, even the main menu is full of cool effects. Instead of a mouse pointer you have a laser, complete with flying sparks and pressure being exerted on the controls. This is one of my favorite game user interfaces of all time.

The other thing that these games all have have in common is wonderful sound effects. The music is fast paced, just like the games, but not overpowering. It really brings you into the game, and helps keep your attention focused on the screen. And we can't forget all those explosions. If you turn up your speakers, somebody might think there is a small battlefield contained within in your room.

One thing that is really nice about Pangea Arcade is that even with the outstanding visual and audio quality, you don't need the latest in gaming hardware to play the games. The minimum system requirements are low enough that people who have computers which are starting to show there age will still be able to enjoy these games. This really shows what some good programmers can accomplish if they put their minds to it.

Problems:

I encountered no software issues while playing this game.

Conclusion:

Pangea Arcade is a great time waster. I often fire it up when I want to simply fill a few minutes with some fast paced, action packed entertainment. All three games are a ton of fun, and have kept me coming back to play more. This game is unquestionably worth its low price tag.

Arbitrary Quote - I finally came up with a punishment for the boy. First, no leaving the house, not even for school. Second, no egg nog. In fact, no nog period! And third, absolutely no stealing for three months!
