denotes Mac OS X native compatibility.NotePad 1.0 ![]()
System Requirements: PowerMac with Mac OS 8.0 or later ![]() |
Price: $15 |
| NotePad is a replacement for Apple's desktop application, also named Note Pad. However, this one is quite a bit more advanced. Such things as Foldered notes, date stamps, timed notes, to-do items, drag and drop with URLs and text, floating pallete ability, and hierarchability make this thing more of a personal organizer than a note pad. But still, Apple did away with the Note Pad in OS X, so this program fills in a great big hole left behind. | |
SuperGIF 1.5 ![]() | |
| System Requirements: PowerMac with Mac OS 7.5.5 or later | Price: $29.95 |
| SuperGIF is an application that does one thing, but does it well. It will take your GIF images, and compress them without loosing the quality. Normally, it can take photoshop GIFs, and remove 15-20% of the size. If you run a website with hundreds of images, this program can be well worth it. By cutting down on file sizes, your pages will oad faster, and your visitors will be more likely to come back. | |
nMiniChat o.1d ![]() | |
| System Requirements: PowerMac | Price: $0 |
| nMiniChat is a very small peer-to-peer chat program. It works over TCP/IP so it will work accross networks, and the web. Plus, it boasts a floating window, that will sit atop anything, including full screen games, so you can always catch the latest message as soon as it comes in. While this is a decent idea, I think it should be an option one can turn on and off, incase you need to save desktop space, or don't have dual monitors. Other than that, this is a great application if you want to bypass those Instant Messaging services. | |
| Mactracker 1.2 | |
System Requirements: Mac OS 8.5 or later (including X) ![]() |
Price: $0 |
| Mactracker tries to Pick up where Guru left off (when NewerTech died, so did Guru). It displays a moderate ammount of informaiton for Mac desktops and portables, Apple displays, and Apple printers. However, it has to go a long way before having the quality of Guru. There are no Mac clones, some information is incorrect or not complete, and much more information should be provided for each model. About the best thing this program hasgoing for it, is that the author is still working on it, so new updates are frequent, and it includes the newest machines. | |
WhizGraph 1.0 ![]() | |
| System Requirements: PowerMac with Mac OS 7.5 or later | Price: $45 |
| WhizGraph is an advanced graphing program. By entering values in a spreadsheet, one can make dozens of graphs. You can also do statistical and calculus funtions on the graphs and data. Not to mention the advanced calculator and the ability to sort the data in the spread sheet. While this can be a very useful program, some things are hard to understand, and the help section is incomplete. A little more work done on that, and this could be the best graphig program around. | |
TheGoodBook 1.1 ![]() | |
| System Requirements: PowerMac with Mac OS 8.5 or later | Price: $10 |
| TheGoodBook 1.1 is an address book program that could use a little work. You can enter names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, web sites, and more about a person. You can also search and sort your entries. However, the interface leaves a little something to be desired, and many bugs are inconsistancies are found throughout the program. With a little work, this could be a very good program, but in it's present form, it's not worth $10. | |
SnapperHead 3.1 ![]() | |
| System Requirements: PowerMac with Mac OS 8.5 or later, 12MB of free RAM, and Carbon Lib 1.2 | Price: $0 |
| SnapperHead is nice simple application that sets up a mini web server for you, that will do one thing. When someone enters your IP address into their favorite browser, SnapperHead will then take a screen shot, convert it to jpg format, and display it in that persons window. This can come in handy if you want to show somebody how to do something, or if you need to set up some settings the same across a network. Since file sizes are somewhat large, it works best with faster connections. | |
Web Album Wizard 1.3 ![]()
| System Requirements: PowerMac with Mac OS 8.1 or later, and QuickTime 3.0 or later | Price: $19.95 |
| Web Album Wizard is a program that will take your digital photos, and allow you to easily create thumbnail web pages for them. The step-by-step usage is a quick, no mess solution to making good looking photoalbums. However, I feel the price is kind of high for a program that really only does one thing, that can be done for free (with a little more work). If this program was half the price, it would get a whole extra splotch. | |
Altivec Fractal Carbon 1.0 ![]()
System Requirements: PowerMac with Mac OS 8.5 or later and Carbon Lib 1.0.4 or later ![]() |
Price: $0 |
| Altivec Fractal Carbon harness the power of multiple CPUs, the Velocity Engine in G4s, and Mac OS X's Carbon. However, you can run it on single CPU machines, and any PowerMac. What it does is run a Mandelbrot-like fractals, to compute the power of your CPU. For instance, my 466MHz G4 usually gets about 1500 MegaFlops, my 500 MHz G3 usually gets about 325 MegaFlops, and the 6115CD upgraded to a 225 MHz G3 gets about 110 MegaFlops. The great thing about this application is it does not take into account hard drive speed, RAM speed, system extensions, or anything but the power of your CPU and FPU. This should be the program that everyone adopts to measure CPU speed. | |
Weather Center 1.0b5 ![]()
| System Requirements: PowerMac with Mac OS 8.0 or later and an internet connection | Price: $10 |
| If you need to constantly watch the weather, or are planning a trip and would like frequent updates on where you are going, or you are just a weather buff, this probgram is for you. It easily let's you monitor the weather in the background. Also, it will quickly let you check out forcasts, without needing to open another browser window. Currently, I don't think it's worth the price, but add a few more features, and this will be a great weather watching utility. | |
Ircle 3.0.4 ![]() | |
| System Requirements: Mac OS 7.0, TCP 2.0.x, or Open Tansport 1.1 or higher, 2MB free RAM | Price: $15 |
| Ircle is a chat client for the IRC protocol. Over 50,000 people world wide use it to chat about everything from computers, to pets, to everything you can imagine. Setting up and finding channels can be very difficult (and working with it behind a firewall is a lot of work. There are more settings that you will ever use. Just figuring out how to connect to a server, and then finding the room (channel) you want can be impossible unless you were instructed by someone else. Even with this archaic interface, this is one of the most popular chat protocol of all time. | |
April Fools 1.0 ![]() | |
| System Requirements: Varies | Price: $0 |
| April Fools is a collection of April Fools pranks that you can pull on other people. From a burping Mac, to actions like "PeeWee Herman," you can pull all sorts of tricks on your friends. Celebrate Apple's 25th anniversary with some fun with your Mac loving friends. | |
Screen Capture 2.3.3 ![]()
| System Requirements: Mac OS 7.0 or later | Price: $25 |
| While every Mac has the built in ability to take screen shots, it's limited to the entire screen, or part of the screen. This utility expands upon this by letting you take screen shots of entire documents, web pages, or whatever else would normally need to be scrolled, with multiple pictures, and pasted together with Photoshop. Also, instead of the normal PICT, you can save the images as GIF and JPEG files as well. Not to mention that you can specify where the images are saved, and how they are named. This is what Apple should incorporate for their built in screen shot utility. | |
iTunes Associator 1.6 ![]()
| System Requirements: Mac OS 9.0 or later, 400 K of RAM, iTunes | Price: $0 |
| This program will take any MP3 you have, and change the creator and type codes so that is becomes an iTunes file. Through a simple drag and drop, you can either change files one a t a time, or all at once. A small status window will tell you the progress, and how many files were coverted. You can even drop folders into it, and this program will search the folders for MP3 files, and change them. A very useful application for those switching from a different MP3 player, or those transferring MP3s over a LAN. | |
DeskPictRotator Pro 1.0 ![]()
| System Requirements: Mac OS 8.5 or later | Price: $10 |
| Desk Pict Rotator is a program that will rotate your desktop pictures at specified intervals. You choose when, and which pictures, and it will do the rest. However, for $10, this program isn't worth it. You can drag a folder full of pictures to the right window in the Mac OS, and do almost the same thing for free. Although the Mac OS doesn't let you schedule them, that feature is definitly not worth the asking price. | |
