Here is a much cooler icon for the beige G3: Over the Summer of 1998 I started to work at Shopko. Not to get CDs or a car, but to get a new computer. I worked my butt off trying to save up enough money. Then one day I got a new MacMall magazine. It had a $100 instant rebate on computers, a 17" monitor for only $200, and it was still in time to get the 32 MBs of RAM free from Apple. This was great, all except I didn't quite have enough money. I talked it over with my mom, and she said I could put it on her credit card, and pay whatever I didn't have with money from my savings account. YES!!! That day I ordered it.
The next day I was very anxious. I was doing whatever I could to keep myself occupied (although I was looking out the window every 5 minutes). Finally at about 11:30 I saw the FedEx truck come up. I almost RAN out to get my new computer.
I set it up in about 15 minutes, and started it up. I thought to myself, man this thing is fast. And it is, compared to my old 25 MHz 68040. I spent the next couple of hours installing just about every game I had. Now everyday after school, or work, I run in my room and start it up.
You may be wondering what I got. Well I got a G3 233MHz desktop, Mac OS 8.1, 4 GB hard drive, 64 MB RAM (32 Megs free from Apple), 2MB VRAM for the RagePro 2D accelerator, 24x CD-ROM, 17" monitor, speakers, and a 33.6 modem.
Since then I have upgraded the computer substantially: installed an extra 224MB RAM for a total of 288MB, upgraded it with a 466MHZ (overclocked to 500Mhz) MACh G3z ZIF from XLR8, installed an ATI Radeon 7000 PCI card, and added a USB 1.1 PCI card. It is currently running Mac OS X 10.2.8
Since getting my new G5, this machine has been delegated to running distributed.net and the occasional boot into OS 9 for scanning purposes.
